Hotspot Italy – the number of migrants has quadrupled since the beginning of 2023

Date:

Despite the right-wing government in Rome, the number of migrants arriving in Italy has quadrupled since early 2023. According to official figures, almost 27,000 boat migrants have been registered since the beginning of January. Last weekend alone, 5573 people arrived on the southern Italian coasts.

While the flow of migration to Italy never stops, the rescue organization “Mediterranea” appeals to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and President Sergio Mattarella. “There should be no more wars against NGOs and civilian rescue ships. Let’s work together to save as many lives as possible at sea,” Mediterranea writes in a letter on Monday. The organization called on the European Union “to launch a European rescue operation in the Mediterranean in the face of a difficult summer for us is”.

The arrest of the rescue ship “Louise Michel” caused disagreements. The ship’s captain, Reimar Beckert, is accused of conducting three separate rescue operations in Libyan and Maltese waters. He is said to have disregarded instructions from the Italian authorities for landing in the Sicilian port of Trapani and took an excessive number of people on board.

government is trying
The Italian government is now trying to encourage legal entry. Foreign workers can apply for 82,705 residence permits, 13,000 more than last year. 44,000 immigration permits are reserved for seasonal agricultural workers. Nursing staff and domestic help are excluded from the quota.
