No equal treatment – complaints about division of tasks at the Ministry of the Interior

Between 2006 and 2023, 175 applicants for government jobs contacted the Equal Treatment Commission. Most complaints concern the Ministry of the Interior. For example, they talk about obstacles that arise from someone’s worldview.

A total of 124 people contacted the Equal Treatment Commission in connection with the Ministry of the Interior between 2006 and 2023. That is 70 percent of all applications for public jobs. According to the Ministry of the Interior, the high number of complaints is related to the size of the department and the many hierarchical levels.

Half a million euros in damages
According to “profile” research, discrimination was actually found among 65 police officers. It was said that they had the wrong party register or no party register at all. In ten other cases such discrimination could not be completely ruled out.

Therefore, every second complaint was upheld. The affected losing candidates received a total of half a million euros in compensation payments between 2011 and 2023.

The Equal Treatment Commission (GBK) supports both the labor and social courts and the civil courts. Applications can be submitted by those who feel discriminated against, but also by the equal treatment lawyer, the works council, an interest group or a lawyer.
