Not only among the Greens – Sachslehner causes outrage among asylum seekers

Date:

About 16,000 asylum applications have been lodged in Austria since the beginning of the year. That is more than in the years 2018 to 2020. For Laura Sachslehner, secretary general of the ÖVP, this is “a warning sign that we need to be vigilant”. She wrote on Twitter that Austria would suffer from the many asylum applications and was criticized by her own coalition partner.

As reported, most applications are made by people from Afghanistan and Syria. Refugees from Ukraine are currently only in eighth place, which is taken as an indication that most of them hope to return. According to Laura Sachslehner, secretary general of the ÖVP, a distinction must also be made between war refugees and economic refugees. The EU should not be misled by opening its borders to all migrants because of the need for neighborly aid for Ukraine.

Effective protection of the external borders is needed. “Full controls are needed at the EU’s external borders. This also means that Frontex must continue to do its job consistently, because a strong border security service is needed today more than ever. This is apparent from the number of illegal border crossings, which is showing a sharp increase,” Sachslehner said in a broadcast on Sunday. The fight against smuggling must also be conducted consistently.

accusation of racism
The 27-year-old has been criticized mainly for her report that Austria would suffer “from the second highest burden of asylum applications per capita in the EU”. Ewa Ernst-Dziedzic, spokeswoman for the Greens’ foreign policy, accuses her of “racist polemic”. The Viennese alderman Viktoria Spielfrau (Greens) thinks that Sachslehner himself would be a burden in Austria.

There was also criticism from former reporter and partner of former health minister Rudi Anschober, Petra Ramsauer and Daniel Landau, who is active in the field of education. Artists such as the Linz hip-hop band Texta and voices from the population also disagreed with Sachslehner’s statement. Ramsauer demanded a definition of “suffering,” Texta recalled wars in Syria and Afghanistan after Sachslehner described these people as economic refugees.

The ÖVP Secretary General is followed by more than 5,000 people on Twitter. Only recently did she write there that access to Austrian citizenship should not be simplified. For example, immigrants should first integrate in Austria and contribute to society. Just living here is not enough.
