Harald Vilimsky, the FPÖ’s top candidate, dominates the headlines after the elephant round. “Because he positioned himself protectively against the Green candidate Lena Schilling and did so cleverly by combining this with attacks on the Freedom Party,” said Christoph Haselmayer, pollster at the Institute for Demoscopy and Data Analysis (IFDD). The election campaign is firstly about avoiding mistakes and secondly about mobilizing voters.
Liberal voters in particular are more difficult to mobilize in the EU elections, Vilimsky also knows that, according to Haselmayer. “But things look significantly different in the National Council elections.” The other top candidates also did a lot of good, because their content at least appealed to their own voters.
Under the motto: “The Greens are destroying themselves, we don’t have to beat them anymore,” no top EU candidate wanted to say bad words about the Schilling case on Thursday. Nevertheless, the accusations have political relevance, Haselmayer explains. “Because of course they dominate the media.”
