In an interview on krone.tv, Werner Bolek again comments on a referendum that he helped initiate. There are currently two opposing requests: you can sign ‘for’ or ‘against’ Austria’s departure from the EU.
Bolek: “Austria is at the bottom of the EU-27 in all surveys when it comes to approval from the European Union.” The two opposing referendums are therefore about determining the current position of the EU in our country thirty years after the EU referendum.
Bolek: “Switzerland or Norway are not EU members either, but they have similarities with the EU in many areas. For example, when it comes to the freedom to travel or on the labor market.”
In general, referendums must obtain 100,000 signatures to be considered in parliament. There they are first assigned to a specialized committee, where experts or the initiators of the referendum are also heard. The committee then reports on the content of the expert discussions and can, but is not required to, issue advice to the House of Representatives.
The initiators have launched referendums several times in the past, often in opposition, as is now the case with remaining in the EU. The referendums on mandatory vaccinations had a major influence.
Bolek: “Austria was the wrong driver when it came to mandatory vaccinations. And the referendums have shown that.”
