Karoline Edtstadler may now regret her decision not to run in the EU parliamentary elections. According to political expert Thomas Hofer, the EU and constitutional minister could have become the EU heroine of the ÖVP.
You could only burn your fingers in these EU elections – that was the unanimous opinion of some figureheads of the ÖVP team. Edtstadler in particular, who would be destined for Brussels as EU minister of the ÖVP, informed her party leader Karl Nehammer through the media that she was not available to stand as a candidate. A decision she may regret today.
“Certainly as a woman, she could have scored points in this election campaign and perhaps made up those few tenths of a point compared to the FPÖ,” political expert Hofer told the “Krone”. Since no one wanted to face almost certain defeat, experienced party soldier Reinhold Lopatka entered the arena of the election campaign. He did not want to abandon the ÖVP. Nehammer’s words when introducing the top candidate were telling. “Thank you for doing this to yourself.”
Left the election party very early
As we all know, things turned out differently. Instead of complaining, the ÖVP is now firmly in the chancellor duel. If Edtstadler had achieved the surprise success in the EU elections, she might even have become a real competitor for Nehammer within the party. So she missed this opportunity and gambled away because she didn’t have the courage. Perhaps that is why Edtstadler left the election party very early.
