Several outliers – Salzburg stepped out of line in the EU elections

Date:

The ÖVP remained in first place in the state of Salzburg. The FPÖ with a big plus, the SPÖ with a small plus.

The population of Salzburg voted significantly differently from the rest of Austria in the elections to the EU Parliament. Only the FPÖ could really celebrate in Salzburg with an increase of almost ten percentage points. However, the ÖVP remained safely in first place. Also striking: after the successful municipal elections, the SPÖ also saw a striking increase of 2.4 percentage points in the EU elections in the state. In contrast to the rest of Austria, Neos only experienced a barely noticeable increase.

Voter turnout in the elections fell to 53.8 percent
Voter turnout in the elections was lower than the national average, with the lowest in Pinzgau at 50.2 percent. Of the eight communities with the lowest participation, only one is not in Pinzgau. Voter turnout in the elections was highest in Forstau, at 71.2 percent. The ÖVP is the only party that has achieved an absolute majority in some municipalities. Namely in Hüttschlag (53.6 percent), Weißpriach, Göriach and Saalbach-Hinterglemm. The FPÖ performed particularly well in Lungau. In the four municipalities with the best blue election results, Muhr, Zederhaus, St. Andrä and Thomatal, the FPÖ achieved more than 40 percent.

The KPÖ Plus in Salzburg was well above the national average, but at 3.7 percent it would not have exceeded the four percent mark here either. In the city there was 6.2 percent, the second best result in the state capitals, after Graz. DNA, which participated for the first time, also performed above average and achieved a score of 2.9 percent. In St. Koloman, the party that specialized in criticism of the Corona measures received 6.2 percent. There were especially many voices in the Tennengau community. The ÖVP lost almost 25 percentage points, the FPÖ won more than 20 percentage points.
