He was probably the surprise of the EU election: the green organic farmer Thomas Waitz won 75,000 preferential votes and clearly performed better than top candidate Lena Schilling. In the interview he explains why the role of the delegation leader is overestimated, why he understands the frustration of FPÖ voters and that he is just an unskilled worker on his own farm.
“Krone”: Mr Waitz, you received 75,000 preferential votes in the EU elections, only Harald Vilimsky (FPÖ) received more. Did the result surprise you?
Thomas Waitz: IIn the last two weeks of the election campaign I already had the feeling that I would receive many preferential votes. But I was also surprised that there were so many. I see it as great appreciation for my many years of dedication.
