Eider Mendoza confirms that the connection of the TAV via Ezkio-Itsaso is essential for Gipuzkoa

Date:

The Deputy General has assured that the Ezkio-Itsaso solution shortens the journey by 25 minutes and believes that “a solution that increases travel times cannot be considered valid.”

Gipuzkoa’s general deputy, Eider Mendoza, has expressed concern as the Vitoria-Gasteiz alternative is gaining momentum as a point to connect the Basque Y line with Pamplona-Iruñea, compared to the Ezkio-Itsaso option. In his words, the knowledge that the connection with Navarre could move away from Gipuzkoa is “terrible news” and he wanted to emphasize that they will defend “this alternative with total determination”.

The Vice General does not share the arguments on the table in favor of the Vitoria-Gasteiz option. He explained that the choice of “the Ezkio-Itsaso solution would mean that the journey between Donostia and Pamplona would be shortened by as much as 25 minutes compared to that alternative, and that is precisely the main value of the TAV: the speed of the travels. “.

From his point of view, after years of waiting, the citizens of Gipuzkoa would “not understand or agree” to extend the connection with Navarre to the capital Araba, “with more direct options, with less impact on the landscape and more effective in improving rail connectivity”.

Mendoza added that the TAV “will be a key element in the competitiveness of Euskadi and Gipuzkoa, in promoting sustainable mobility and decarbonizing our society, so we cannot as a solution that will significantly extend the times of the routes validly accept. influence the use that citizens will make of it”.

On the other hand, according to him, “the argument that some municipalities governed by parties opposed to the TAV could delay the procedures for its construction is also not acceptable.” For this reason, she has asked all administrations involved to facilitate all procedures to accelerate its construction.

Finally, the deputy requested that progress be made on the work on the launch of the TAV in Gipuzkoa, as well as on the construction of the Donostia, Irun and Ezkio-Itsaso stations. In turn, it has demanded that the central government give priority to the Ezkio-Itsaso connection of the TAV with Navarre.

With all this, he has committed himself to conveying this position both to the Basque government, which will be formed in the coming days, and to the central government, which is competent in this matter, “so that they tip the balance as quickly as possible to a connection via Ezkio-Itsaso”.
