Several national council members have been earning at the level of the Federal Chancellor for some time now. Payday instead of election day is currently more important than ever in top politics. Thanks to real and ‘half’ zero wage rounds, Vienna’s mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) and Lower Austria’s governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP) have been earning more since Monday than Green Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler and the outgoing chairman of the ÖVP National Council, Wolfgang Sobotka.
Carinthia, Vienna and Lower Austria will increase their salaries by the full inflation correction of 9.7 percent from 1 July, all other states by 4.85 percent since the turn of the year. In contrast to other states, Vienna and Lower Austria have so far – as reported – matched almost every increase in politicians’ salaries. As if that were not enough, the latest parliamentary transparency data also contain a lot of explosiveness.
As reported, our MPs, despite a basic income of over 10,000 euros gross per month, also have multiple jobs. 183 MPs have 255 part-time jobs. And sometimes politicians are even paid better for their extra income than for their political job. Seven MPs even earn money at chancellor level.
