The President of Navarra has claimed the role of Agenda 2030 as “reinforcement in the face of the challenges of this century.”

The President of Navarre, Maria Chiviteparticipated today in New York (USA) in the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, organized by the United Nations, where he defended that “the global must be addressed from the local.” He also claimed the role of the 2030 Agenda as “reinforced in the light of the challenges of this century.”

Appearing as part of a Spanish delegation, the President of the Foral Community was accompanied by the Third Vice-President of the Spanish Government and Minister of Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Riberaand the Minister of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030, Pablo Bustinduy.

In his speech, Chivite pointed out the advantage that the autonomous communities have for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, as they have closer contact with the areas where this initiative aims to have an impact. “The proximity to action allows us to adapt our policies to the specific needs of our areas,” he indicated.

The President of Navarra also reviewed the elements that make Navarra an excellent community in achieving the SDGs, such as the implementation of the programme. Schools for equality education and gender policy adaptation to climate change or the Guaranteed Income Program.

“We are,” he said, “one of the places with less poverty and inequality from the country. Also where we enjoy a higher quality of life. That is why it has been natural for our people to start from the sustainable development goals.”

Finally, Chivite has reaffirmed this “our commitment as a people” with the 2030 Agenda. “Its spirit is part of the DNA of Navarra,” he said, concluding: “We are very aware of the weight that our legacy will have for future generations.”

The Foral Community began its path in the Agenda 2030 with a mandate from the Parliament of Navarra in 2016, just one year after the United Nations Declaration approving the creation of this instrument.
