Representatives of the Public Prosecution Service for Economic Affairs and Corruption (WKStA) will meet on Thursday with the parties represented in the ÖVP Corruption Investigation Commission. The reason is the investigation of ex-ÖBAG boss Thomas Schmid on 3 November. With his statements, he had heavily burdened several ÖVP politicians, including ex-chancellor Sebastian Kurz.
Because the interrogations have not yet been completed, the WKStA has requested consultations so that the investigations are not hindered by the interrogation in the U-committee. However, the Public Prosecution Service must rely on the willingness of the parties to cooperate. She cannot insist that certain questions not be asked in the subcommittee.
According to reports, the WKStA had no concerns that Schmid was being questioned about, among other things, the “advertising affair”, the so-called leg scraper or various false statements in the committee. Because the suspect had already made a statement about this, which was available for inspection in the files.
However, a hearing that goes beyond the contents of the unedited portions of the report raises concerns that the WKStA’s investigation could be jeopardized. Unanimity is required to reach a joint agreement – including the approval of the ÖVP.
