Outrage in Austria – Vilimsky described EU politicians as “witches”

Date:

EU parliamentarian Harald Vilimsky (FPÖ) described the newly elected parliament president Roberta Metsola, ECB president Christine Lagarde and EU Commission president Ursula von der Leyen as a “political trio of witches”. The remark was made on Wednesday during a press conference in Strasbourg. It has now been sharply criticised by the Greens and the SPÖ.

The three politicians would lead this continent into the abyss, “and we will make them feel the whip,” Vilimsky said on Wednesday. They deserved it because of “improprieties, because of all the undemocratic procedures.” The SPÖ and the Greens have now demanded an apology from the politician. “Harald Vilimsky is a sexist who is afraid of strong women,” said Green deputy club leader Meri Disoki.

“Reminiscent of the dark ages”
“These kinds of statements are reminiscent of the Dark Ages and are unworthy of a democratic discussion,” says SPÖ women’s leader Eva-Maria Holzleitner. What was said was sexist and glorified violence. The politician expects an “immediate apology and the FPÖ distances itself from these statements.”

“There never were any witches”
The SPÖ Carinthia speaks in a broadcast of “inappropriate rhetoric”. “Mr. Vilimsky uses language that is not appropriate for his office. He actually talks about ‘witches who want to make you feel the whip’. This is an explicit verbal insult, including the threat of violence (…)”, says Petra Oberrauner, women’s leader of SPÖ Carinthia.

There have never been magical creatures riding broomsticks. “But there have always been strong women – and always weak, insecure men who compensate for their weakness with violence and violent fantasies towards women,” says Andreas Sucher, state manager of SPÖ Carinthia.
