As soon as a solution acceptable to those affected has been found, there is renewed criticism of the new option for abortions at the Bregenz hospital.
Only on Wednesday did state governor Markus Wallner (ÖVP) present a long-awaited solution to the abortion issue. In the future, abortions will be performed at the Bregenz Hospital. This is now causing criticism again – in the church. Bishop Benno Elbs commented specifically on the subject on the diocesan website.
It states, among other things: “The hospital is a place where saving lives is the primary goal. The choice of location has symbolic power.’ Elbs admits that the decision should be made by politicians, but that does not stop him from raising awareness against the solution that was ultimately found. It is repeatedly emphasized that the church is in no way interested in judging women who have had an abortion. It is also not about ‘criminal liability’. Instead, an environment must be created “where people can say yes to their children.” The bishop did not elaborate on how this difficult task could be solved.
Calls for resignation from radical sides
The chairwoman of the pro-life movement ‘Youth for Life Austria’, Gabriela Huber, echoes the same sentiments. Abortions in a public hospital are a scandal with many consequences. She also described responsible members of the state government as “enemies of life” who should resign.
