After 36 years in politics, Günther Platter officially announced his resignation on Monday. A resignation in installments, as he will remain in office until a new government is formed. The trained book printer, who later became a gendarmerie, subsequently built up an impressive political career. On the turbulent day of his farewell announcement, he took a moment for an interview with the “Krone”.
Municipal councilor in Zams (1986 to 1989), mayor (1989 to 2000), national councilor (1994 to 2000), minister of defense from 2003 to 2007, minister of the interior (2007 to 2008) and finally the Tyrolean governor (2008 to 2022 ).
After Eduard Wallnöfer, who reigned for 24 years, he is the second longest serving provincial governor of Tyrol. His entry into politics in 1986 was more of a fluke.
His electoral success in 2018, the deportation from Arigona, his unrewarded efforts during the Corona crisis and his love for music, which he repeatedly demonstrated with guitar and tenor horn, will not be forgotten. From the fall, Platter will have more time for his mountains and his grandchildren. His withdrawal was also well thought out. Platter has always had a good gut feeling. And that has now told him it’s time to go. You have to go while you can still go yourself.
“Mattle’s the Right Man”
On Monday, shortly after announcing his retirement, Platter took a moment to interview The Crown. The still head of state spoke about the role of his successor Anton Mattle.
„krone“: Is the Tyrolean ÖVP actually a plea for mountain rescue (Mattle is deputy head of the Tyrolean mountain rescue service, take note), as one user on krone.at said?
Dish: Tyrol has developed excellently. As with a top tour, there are ups and downs in politics. The past two years have been particularly challenging. Enemies, insults, threats – I don’t want to miss a day as governor, but I don’t want to go through it a second time either.
Compromising candidate, ideal cast, lifesaver or miracle worker: what is Anton Mattle for the Tyrolean VP?
Anton Mattle is the right man in the right place at the right time. He has the necessary experience and enormous energy for the future of Tyrol. He has proven that he can win elections.
What does an LH Mattle do better than an LH Platter?
Ultimately, the decision to nominate Anton Mattle as a candidate for governor was an easy one for me. It requires reliability, credibility, sense of responsibility and stability. That’s what Anton Mattle stands for.
Will there be an upper limit for election campaign costs in Tyrol and if so, where is it for the VP?
Talks are underway with other parties about our proposal to bring the state elections forward to the autumn and save the Tyrolean people from a nine-month election campaign. In the course of these talks, economy, transparency and fairness in the election campaign will also be discussed.
