The former president of the Generalitat has denounced being denied access to Parliament on the day of Illa’s Investiture, in which he wanted to participate: “I never wanted to give myself up.”
The former president of the Generalitat Carlos Puigdemont reappeared this Saturday in a video posted on the social network In it, he justified his decision to return to Waterloo and warned that the process continues: ‘The independence process is not over yet’.
In an eight-minute video, Puigdemont claims that after his short speech to nearly 3,500 believers in front of the Arc de Triomphe in Barcelona and his subsequent escape without a trace and without being able to be arrested by the Mossos d’Esquadra, he was given priority “First be able to return to a safe place”and then to his “Belgian residence, here, in Waterloo,” although in the video he avoids showing evidence that he is indeed in Belgium.
With this, Puigdemont has declared that he does not intend to surrender to justice and assures that his intention was to participate in the inauguration of Salvador Illa as President of the Generalitat, which was his main objective: “Trying to access Parliament would represent a safe arrest and no possibility of addressing the camera, which was my objective. It would amount to a voluntary surrender if my arrest were effective”, he argues.
That is why the former president insists that at no time was it his intention to surrender “to a judicial authority that is not competent.” And Puigdemont has stated that Justice has “no interest in doing justice” but rather in “doing politics”.
In addition, Puigdemont has harshly attacked the ERC government, which he accuses of “collaboration” with the Spanish state: “I could not imagine that this strategy of judicial rebellion would enthusiastic cooperation from a government of Catalonia who no longer had time.”
Despite everything, the former president confirms that this does not mean that the ‘process’ is over and is therefore still active: The independence process ends with independence (…) A new phase is opening, with different conditions.”
