Israel claims to have defeated the Hamas brigade in the Rafah area in the southern Gaza Strip.
“The Rafah Brigade has been defeated and more than 150 tunnels in this region have been destroyed,” Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said during a visit to the border area between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. He ordered the troops to now concentrate on destroying the remaining tunnels. Tunnels target the border between the coastal strip and Egypt.
Despite massive international criticism, Israel entered Rafah in May to destroy the remaining forces of the Islamist terrorist organization there. According to estimates, about a million refugees who had gathered there left the city. Israeli forces also captured the Rafah border crossing into Egypt and the so-called Philadelphia corridor.
This roughly 14-kilometer-long area is considered one of the biggest points of contention in the Gaza ceasefire negotiations. Hamas calls on Israel to withdraw completely from the Gaza Strip. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on the other hand, insists that Israel must continue to control the corridor even after a ceasefire to prevent weapons smuggling.
background
The Gaza war was triggered by the worst massacre in Israel’s history, with more than 1,200 dead, carried out by terrorists from Hamas and other extremist groups on October 7 last year. More than 250 hostages were kidnapped from Israel to Gaza.
According to the Hamas-controlled health authority, the subsequent Israeli offensive on the closed coastal strip killed 40,223 people and wounded nearly 93,000. The information, which cannot be independently verified, makes no distinction between fighters and civilians.
