After Venezuela’s controversial presidential election, the country’s highest court confirmed the victory of incumbent Nicolas Maduro after examining the electoral authority’s material, it said on Thursday.
“The electoral material examined is perfectly certified,” said court president Caryslia Rodriguez. The decision cannot be appealed. As reported, Venezuela’s electoral authority awarded Maduro a third term on July 28 with about 51 percent of the vote, without publishing the exact number. The opposition claimed victory.
In the days following the election, protests broke out across the country and abroad (see video above), calling for Maduro’s resignation and recognition of the victory of opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez. The protests spread primarily through social media.

Maduro recently issued a decree blocking the short message service X for ten days. The UN Commission of Inquiry also warned on social media that both the Supreme Court and the electoral authority were neither independent nor impartial. Both were allegedly led by the ruling party. The EU also does not recognize Maduro’s election victory.
