Minister of Education Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) makes everything clear about the teacher shortage: “Every lesson can continue,” he says. The lateral entry model has proven to be a success, but there are still 100 vacancies unfilled.
Shortly before the start of the semester, almost all of the more than 8,000 advertised vacancies have been filled. “We will be able to hold every lesson in the coming school year,” promises Education Minister Martin Polaschek.
Teaching positions advertised digitally
He sees the digitalization of the application process as a success factor. For the second time, all teaching positions were simultaneously digitally advertised on the platform www.klassejob.at.
This meant that interested parties no longer had to apply to multiple education boards. The staff pool has also become larger than last year. This autumn, 500 career changers will join AHS and BHS. They often applied for science subjects. These are the vacancies that were most difficult to fill with regular applicants.
There are still 100 vacancies unfilled
However, there are still 100 positions considered open. This is not unusual with 120,000 teachers due to sick leave or maternity. Students in higher semesters or retired teachers can fill in for them.
