The representative of EH Bai and deputy of the New Popular Front believes that Macron should give the mandate to form a government to the left-wing candidate Lucie Castets.
Almost two months after the elections for the National Assembly in the French state the president Emmanuel Macron has started with the round of meetings with political parties before the next prime minister is appointed.
The large left-wing coalition, called the New Popular Front, won the largest representation, although it did not win an absolute majority. However, they believe that it is their responsibility to be the ones who form the government.
Peio Dufaurepresentative of Iparralde in the 6th constituency and member of EH Bai, is one of the substitutes of New Popular FrontAs explained on Saturday in Euskadi Irratia, Macron should give the left-wing candidate Lucie Castets the order to form a government, since this is the formation with the most votes and “the decision of the left”.
He recalled that Macron did not obtain an absolute majority in the last elections, but that it was the party with the most votes, and he appointed a prime minister from his party. Therefore, Dufau would consider it self-evident that the decision this time would also be “in the same line”. But “given the latest information, the future looks bleak.”
According to Dufau, a prime minister should be chosen quickly because France currently has no government, but he believes Macron’s game will be “to take enough time to see if there are divisions on the left.”
In fact, parties outside the left front see in the France Insoumise party (a member of the New Popular Front) an obstacle to reaching coalition agreements, because they consider it a “far-left” formation, and that would be precisely the division that would arise. Macron is waiting, according to Dufau, who is however not afraid of such divisions.
It should be noted that elections cannot be called again until June of next year. Likewise, as Dufau explains, “If Macron were to appoint someone from his party, both the left and the far right would file a motion of censure, because he would not respect the results.”
The left-wing Popular Front has nominated Lucie Castets37-year-old economist, known for her work as financial director of the Paris city council and in defense of public services. Castets, who first meeting with Macronexplained that “she is willing to form a coalition that will allow them to govern.”
