Parties questioned – No climate deniers in the Bregenzer Landhaus

Date:

The ‘Vorarlberg Climate Campaign’, an association of forty organizations, has investigated how the parties represented in the state parliament stand on climate protection. The results are remarkable.

All parties agree on one thing: global warming is largely man-made and the Paris climate goals are an absolute must. Given this clarity, this is certainly a surprise.

With one exception, all parties also want to invest more quickly and efficiently in climate protection and lay the foundation for a climate-neutral Vorarlberg in the next two legislatures – only the FPÖ sees no need to increase the pace. “The FPÖ agrees that we must stop global warming as quickly as possible, but sees no need for action to set the course in the next two legislatures. This contradiction could make it much more difficult to form a coalition,” notes Christof Drexel, president of the association “KlimaVOR!”

Furthermore, the ÖVP, Greens, SPÖ and NEOS agree that the topics of individual lifestyle and nutrition should also be included in climate protection strategies. However, there are differences in mobility, construction and energy that are so important for climate protection. NEOS and the Greens are sharply critical of the Feldkirch city tunnel and the S18, while the ÖVP, FPÖ and SPÖ would rather see these projects realized today rather than tomorrow.

The fact that NEOS positions itself so clearly as an economically liberal party is quite surprising, Drexel said. Conversely, he is surprised by the Reds’ attitude: “On the one hand, the SPÖ emphasizes that soil sealing must be slowed down and at the same time it is in favor of high-level road construction with the associated land consumption. That doesn’t suit us.”

Major disagreements arise between the parties over whether Vorarlberg is meeting its self-imposed climate policy goals – the country must be energy autonomous by 2050, and by 2030 they want to halve greenhouse gases compared to 2005 and reduce all electricity and electricity consumption . half of the final energy needs from renewable sources – will be achieved: ÖVP and FPÖ see the state on track – all other parties call for further measures, for example in the field of road construction, industrial support and spatial planning.

Martin Strele, director of “Welthaus Vorarlberg”, criticizes black and blue for refusing to accept reality: “At the current pace we will not reach the goal of minus 50 percent greenhouse gases by 2030. A closer look at the data shows that today there are 20 percent fewer emissions than in 2005, but there has been little improvement since 2014. Claims and reality do not match.”
