The work of the fire brigade is always demanding, but some operations push the Florianis to their physical and mental limits. On Friday, they were called upon by the funeral service in Klagenfurt for a delicate operation.
The body must have been in a bathtub in the water for several days. “Physics prevented the body from being recovered normally using belts or a special belt,” explains Wolfgang Germ of the Klagenfurt professional fire brigade. “The person probably weighed almost 160 kilograms.”
Since neither the funeral home nor the police were equipped for the operation, the professional fire department had to be called in. “Three people worked in the small apartment for three to four hours with heavy breathing apparatus. “Everyone used three bottles of compressed air,” says Germ. “First they had to remove the bathtub and then enlarge the window so the crane could take the bathtub out.”
The respiratory protection was necessary because the body was already in a very advanced state of decomposition. “After the bathtub was loaded onto a truck, the odor nuisance was enormous throughout the street,” Wolfgang Germ describes the situation.
To deal with the psychological stress, further discussions were held with the emergency services in the evening and on Saturday morning.
“There is also a contact person at the magistrate of Klagenfurt. Unfortunately, there are always demanding missions, such as on railway lines or when rescuing particularly heavy people,” says Germ.
