British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has again ruled out a return of his country to the EU during a visit to Berlin. After years of Conservative governments, Britain wants a fresh start in relations with Europe and the EU.
But that does not mean “reversing Brexit or rejoining the EU customs union or the internal market,” the Social Democrat politician said at a press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
He also ruled out a youth mobility program, as Germany would like to pursue for the entire EU and Britain. “We have no plans for a youth mobility program, but we do have plans for a closer relationship,” Starmer said. Nothing has changed in his position since his election in early July, the prime minister insisted, referring to claims from Britain’s Conservative opposition that he wanted to bring the country back into the EU through the back door.
Cooperation between Berlin and London
Chancellor Scholz (SPD) stressed the good relations between Britain and the EU. The people of Britain made a historic decision in 2016, but they remain good friends and want to further strengthen all parts of the relationship.
With this in mind, Starmer and Scholz announced a cooperation agreement between their two countries, which should come into force by the end of the year. This also includes areas such as trade and defense, Starmer said on Wednesday after his meeting with Scholz in the Chancellery in Berlin. Both governments also wanted to reach an agreement on migration issues to better combat irregular migration. This should also involve greater data sharing.
Starmer said there had never been such a comprehensive cooperation agreement with Germany. Scholz announced that talks between the German-British governments would take place soon.
