The US has seized the plane of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. According to a media report, the Dassault Falcon 900, which cost around twelve million euros, was seized in the Dominican Republic and has already been taken to Florida.
According to CNN, the action was punishment for violating U.S. sanctions. “This sends a clear message to the country’s leaders that no one is above the law or beyond the reach of sanctions,” an unnamed U.S. official said.
The United States has been fighting for years against what it sees as illicit money flows to Maduro and his government. In addition to freezing billions of dollars in Venezuelan capital, two nephews of the president’s wife were sentenced by a New York court to 18 years in prison for drug trafficking. The two were later released as part of a prisoner swap.
Maduro’s re-election will not be recognized
The conflict between the US and the South American country has further intensified after the recent presidential elections, which were overshadowed by allegations of fraud. The opposition accuses the government of electoral fraud and claims victory for its candidate Edmundo González. The US and several Latin American countries have already recognized the election victory of the ex-diplomat. The European Union and the Organization of American States also doubt the official election results.
