A separate room in the Chancellery is dedicated to the late former Chancellor and Supreme Court Judge Brigitte Bierlein. The current head of government, Karl Nehammer, had her former office renamed “Bierlein-Zimmer”.
Austria’s first female chancellor died on 3 June this year – exactly on the day she was sworn in with her interim government five years ago. Her successor Nehammer also wanted to erect a monument to the ‘great Austrian’ in the Federal Chancellery. The room in which she held office as head of government from 3 June 2019 to 7 January 2020 is now named after her.
For Nehammer, the ‘Bierlein Hall’ should be a ‘place of recognition, deep respect and remembrance’ of the popular politician who led the country in times of crisis.
The then President of the Constitutional Court moved to the Chancellery in 2019 as head of a government of experts, while nothing was happening politically in the country as a result of the Ibiza scandal
