The Minister of the Interior has indicated that “in more than half of the accidents, the element of alcohol and other drugs appears to be a determining factor.”
The Spanish government is working “seriously” to reduce the maximum alcohol level while driving for all driversas announced on Thursday by the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska.
Although the minister did not provide further details, sources from his ministry have assured that this is being considered reduce the current rate of 0.5 grams per liter of blood to 0.20 or from 0.25 milligrams per liter of inhaled air to 0.10 for all drivers.
The reduction in alcohol rates is a proposal from victims and road safety associations that the ministry has adopted and has been included in the draft reform of the General Traffic Regulations with regard to vulnerable users.
“In more than half of the accidents, alcohol and other drugs appear to be a determining factor”said Marlaska during an informative breakfast at the Nueva Economía Fórum.
The previous proposal by the Directorate-General for Transport (DGT) to reduce drink-driving rates, included in the draft amendment to the regulations, was only aimed at professional and novice drivers.
