The LKA found out that the fire at the asylum was in fact arson

Date:

So yes! After it was initially said that there was no evidence of foul play in the fire at an asylum accommodation in Schönau im Mühlkreis (Upper Austria), the case now looks very different: investigators from the LKA Upper Austria found evidence that an ignition had taken place there.

The major fire in the former inn “Oberndorfer Stub’m” in the municipality of Schönau im Mühlkreis took place on Tuesday night around 12:45. The fire broke out on the ground floor and then spread relatively quickly to the upper floor and to the attic.

Closed since 2023
The inn has been closed since 2023, and therefore the former restaurant and the room where the fire broke out contained garden tools and large quantities of liquid fuel, which were probably used to accelerate the spread of the fire.

It failed in two places
During the inspection of the hostel, two other burns were found, apparently involving an attempted fire. Because there are apparently three different locations of the fire, it is assumed that arson was involved. The residential units on the first floor were only secondarily affected by the fire. The 16 residents and one guest were evacuated, but were unharmed. The investigation into the perpetrator is still ongoing.
