Microsoft says Russian actors are ramping up their disinformation campaign against US presidential candidate Kamala Harris. A Kremlin-linked group called Storm-1516 has produced two fake videos since late August to discredit Harris’ election campaign and her running mate Tim Walz, the US company said on Tuesday.
One video shows a group of alleged Harris supporters attacking an alleged attendee at a Trump rally. The other video shows an actor spreading a fabricated claim that Harris injured a girl in a 2011 crash, who has since been paralyzed, and committed a hit-and-run.
According to Microsoft, both videos have been viewed millions of times.
Following the fake news campaign surrounding the Paris Olympics, a second Russian group called Storm-1679 is now also focused on distributing videos intended to discredit Harris, the Microsoft report said.
In early September, the US accused Russia of large-scale attempts to manipulate the November 5 presidential election and imposed sanctions on several people responsible for Russia’s state broadcaster RT.
