Ensuring Peace: The Situation in the South China Sea is of Great Importance

Date:

The Quad group of countries – the US, India, Japan and Australia – expressed “serious” concerns over the situation in the East and South China Seas after a meeting.

“We are deeply concerned about the situation in the East and South China Seas,” the country said in a statement on Saturday. Biden invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to his hometown of Wilmington.

A White House statement said Biden, Kishida and Albanians were concerned about China’s “coercive measures and destabilizing activities.” “Peace and stability” must be guaranteed, especially in the Taiwan Strait. China views Taiwan as a breakaway province that must be reunited with the mainland — through military force if necessary. Taiwan’s military recently reported almost daily sightings of Chinese fighter jets, drones and naval vessels near the island.

expand efforts
The leaders of the Quad group – the US, Australia, Japan and India – said during their meeting with outgoing US President Joe Biden that they wanted to expand their joint security efforts in Asian waters. During the talks, they also announced joint coast guard operations for maritime surveillance. Where exactly these operations will take place remained unclear. There will also be closer cooperation on military logistics and the supply of urgently needed technologies to the countries of the South Pacific.

As host of the meeting, Biden had previously stressed the stability of the alliance even in the event of a possible change of government in the US. “There will be challenges, the Group of Four will remain,” he said. The Quad group will “exist well beyond November,” he added, referring to the US presidential election on November 5, which could be followed by a more isolationist foreign policy if former President Donald Trump wins.

The quad group
The Quad group of the US, India, Japan and Australia has existed since 2007. Biden had revived the alliance after the isolationist foreign policy of his predecessor Trump. It is intended to counterbalance China’s claim to military and economic power.

With the location of the meeting, Biden underscored the “deep personal connections” with his guests, according to his spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre. The conversations took place at his home and former school in Wilmington, a first, as Jean-Pierre pointed out. “I’m very happy that you were in my home and saw where I grew up,” Biden said.

“The message is: Quad will remain,” Modi also said. The group does not have politics “against anyone,” he stressed, but rather stands for a “rules-based international order.” India is not traditionally an alliance. As part of the Quad group, New Delhi, like other members, had expressed concern over Chinese actions in the South China Sea. India will host the next Quad summit next year.
