The first candidates to succeed Omid Nouripour and Ricarda Lang in the Green Party in Germany have been announced. That is why Franziska Brantner and Felix Banaszak want to run for leadership of the Green Party. The Green Party politicians announced this on Friday afternoon.
The Habeck confidant and the former state leader of North Rhine-Westphalia would like to run for chairman of the party. Already after the announcement of the resignation of the previous bosses, rumors circulated about the two names Brantner and Banaszak. However, both have not yet confirmed their interest in the position.
The strategist and the young economic politician
The election of the new Greens party leaders will take place at the Federal Delegates Conference from November 15 to 17, 2024 in Wiesbaden. 45-year-old Franziska Brantner and 34-year-old Felix Banaszak are considered promising candidates for the leadership position.
Brantner is considered an experienced strategist from the Realo wing of the party. She currently holds the position of Parliamentary State Secretary at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and is one of Robert Habeck’s closest confidantes.
The 34-year-old Banaszak, on the other hand, represents the left wing of the party. He can look back on a four-year term as state chairman in North Rhine-Westphalia and is known for his astuteness.
Both candidates are considered favorites of Robert Habeck, who is considered a potential candidate for chancellor. However, it remains to be seen whether other candidates will emerge for the party leadership.
Presumably Audretsch as Habeck’s campaign leader
Initially, Andreas Audretsch was considered in party circles as a potential candidate for the chairmanship of the Green Party. As a representative of the left wing, he enjoyed broad support there. However, according to the latest information, Audretsch will take on another important role: in addition to his position as deputy parliamentary group leader, he is apparently intended as campaign manager for Robert Habeck’s candidacy for chancellor.
Incumbent party leaders Lang and Nouripour surprisingly announced their withdrawal on Wednesday. They will resign from their positions at the party conference scheduled for November, officially called the “Federal Delegates Conference.” Until then, they will continue to run party activities on an interim basis.
