After the National Council elections, the Austrian political landscape faces major challenges. In the krone.tv interview with Jürgen Winterleitner, communications advisor Nina Hoppe analyzes the election performance of the parties and discusses possible coalition variants.
In her analysis on krone.tv, Nina Hoppe emphasizes how strategically Herbert Kickl conducted his election campaign. “Set in a statesmanlike manner from the start,” is how she describes the images that the FPÖ has put in the foreground. Thanks to his calm rhetoric, Kickl managed to “combine statesmanship with a very calm voice” and thus presented himself as a credible candidate. This mix apparently ultimately struck a chord with voters and catapulted the FPÖ to the top.
The losses of the Greens and the underestimated climate debate
With regard to the Greens, Hoppe shows that their monothematic focus on climate has not achieved the expected success. Despite the clear impacts of climate change, the party did not benefit from extreme weather events, such as the recent flood disaster. Hoppe says: “What the Greens have been predicting for years has now happened,” but the voting behavior of the population shows the opposite trends. The question remains open as to why the Greens have failed to better communicate their successes in recent years to draw more attention to the important issue of global warming for society as a whole.
The coalition issue and possible new elections
The question of how to form a government will be particularly exciting. Hoppe emphasizes that the ÖVP is “stuck in the government”, but that coalition negotiations could be difficult. If a stable government cannot be formed, new elections cannot be ruled out. Nina Hoppe sees Herbert Kickl (FPÖ) in a strong position: “Kickl is in the best position, whatever happens.” Despite all the uncertainties, Hoppe remains optimistic: “Democracy will win against a possible autocratic direction.”
