Current Chancellor and ÖVP leader Karl Nehammer arrived at the Vienna Hofburg on Monday morning for talks with Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen.
No explanations were planned, a smiling Karl Nehammer simply wished the photographers and camera teams present a “good morning” before he and Alexander Van der Bellen disappeared behind the legendary wallpapered door. Even after the conversation, there is no explanation.
Declaration only after discussions have been completed
It was said that a statement was not planned until after the Federal President’s talks were completed, i.e. on Tuesday or Wednesday. After a significant loss of votes, Nehammer’s ÖVP managed to reach second place behind the FPÖ and Herbert Kickl in the National Council elections.
At 1:30 p.m., the third-placed candidate, SPÖ leader Andreas Babler, is expected to speak to the federal president.
Kickl has already claimed the chancellorship
The head of state ranked the talks based on the parties’ voting strength. Kickl said on Friday that he was renewing his claim to the chancellorship at the Hofburg. Van der Bellen is skeptical about a blue government under Kickl. He first wants to talk to all presidents – “with the necessary calm and with the necessary depth”, as he emphasized.
On Tuesday it is the turn of NEOS boss Beate Meinl-Reisinger and Green Party leader Werner Kogler. The ÖVP and SPÖ also want to hold informal consultations on this day. However, both parties emphasized that these should not be official coalition talks.
