Land under in Chiang Mai – In the north of Thailand, residents are suffering the consequences of a flood disaster. Many areas are inaccessible. But one monk still found a way to give those affected a “little bit of joy in their time of need.”
A monk from one of Chiang Mai’s most famous temple complexes packed relief supplies on two elephants and rode the pachyderms to residents in particularly affected areas.
Due to the size of the animals, the minister was also able to ‘provide’ the people living on the first floor with food and supplies.
Elephants are considered good luck charms
Children in particular waved enthusiastically at Monk Odd and the elephants “Khunsaen” and “Saenthap”. Elephants are the national animal of Thailand and are considered a good luck charm. There are statues in many temples and shrines, many companies advertise with elephant symbols, and even a beer brand is called ‘Chang’ – the Thai word for elephant.
After heavy monsoon rains, Chiang Mai – like other regions in northern Thailand – was flooded again late last week. Elephants that were once abused and now live in special camps were also affected by the flood. Over the past few days, helpers had been frantically trying to get them to safety. At least two animals have died in the floods.
