The Minister of Justice and Human Rights, María Jesús San José, has argued that the role of victims should not be limited to that of a passive recipient, but rather that it is necessary to “listen to them and integrate them as a lever for all policies that affect them.”

The Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Socialist María Jesús San José, has warned that Basque citizens and institutions will not be able to fully support others if they do not admit that the same injustices committed in other countries have also taken place in Euskadi.

San José spoke on Tuesday at the United Nations International Conference on Victims of Terrorism, held in Gasteiz, in a section in which the role of institutions to ensure that victims’ rights are recognized and that their needs are supported.

He thanked Euskadi’s choice to hold this conference because this community “unfortunately knows what the drama of terrorism means.”

‘There have been many attacks on our coexistence, we have known several terrorist organizationsas well as the scourge of the abuse And torture”, and we know that ‘the use of terror to impose a political project leads to social fracture, pain and a trail of victimsall deserves remembrance, restoration and justicesaid the advisor.

He has recognized that Basque society “is beginning to come to terms with the wounds left by five decades of terrorism, pain and tears, half a century marked by fear, threats and murders, years that have left us a mark that will take generations to disappear’. “.

But to ease this pain, he has expressed the Basque government’s intention to support the victims so that they “receive just compensation for the suffering they have experienced” and has argued that their role should not be limited to that of a passive recipient, but rather that it is necessary to “listen to them and integrate them as leverage for all policies that concern them”.

He also said that he wants to count on them to contribute to “an education for peace,” because Basque citizens and institutions will not be able to fully support others “if we cannot read that the same injustices committed in other countries were also committed here .”

Saint Joseph therefore hoped that “silence would not be part of the inheritance of new generations” and was convinced that the Basque Country “is committed to coexistence and looks to the future with hope.”
