Extra tension: Vienna and new elections could be combined

Date:

This year, a new city council and a new state parliament will be elected in Vienna. Events in the federal government are now creating additional tensions. The first politicians are calling for the vote to be combined with new federal elections, should they take place at all.

The elections in Vienna would actually be on the agenda in the autumn. So far there are no signs that the five-year legislative period will not be exhausted. That could change if new federal elections were to take place. Viennese FPÖ leader Dominik Nepp has already spoken out in favor of a joint appointment. That would save costs, he argued.

The SPÖ currently governs under Mayor Michael Ludwig with the NEOS. Until now there have almost never been public disputes. Until now, it seemed impossible that the state elections would be presented. It remains to be seen whether the Pink Party’s departure from parliament will worsen the climate in Vienna. Vice Mayor Christoph Wiederkehr (NEOS) recently praised the cooperation with the Reds.

There was already an advance payment
There has already been progress in the recent past. In 2001, the elections did not take place in the autumn, but in March. The then mayor Michael Häupl (SPÖ) decided to take this step, against the wishes of his coalition partner ÖVP. The elections gave the SPÖ an absolute majority.

The influence of the once powerful Vienna SPÖ has waned, but Karl Mahrer (ÖVP) is now saying. “After the resignation of Chancellor Nehammer, it is high time that Vienna’s ÖVP chairman Karl Mahrer also takes off his hat,” demanded the state party secretary of the Vienna Blues, Lukas Brucker. Mahrer is part of the anti-Kickl faction and is said to have longed for a coalition with the ‘Marxist Andreas Babler’.

ÖVP and FPÖ argue
“It is quite remarkable: as soon as the pressure on Dominik Nepp and the Vienna FPÖ increases from their federal headquarters, they respond with attacks on Karl Mahrer and the Vienna People’s Party,” replied deputy regional manager Peter Sverak. The FPÖ diverts attention from the ‘real challenges of Vienna’ and considers the ÖVP as its biggest competitor.
