A top-level Iranian general has resurfaced after days of mystery surrounding his whereabouts. Iranian state media distributed images and videos of Esmail Ghaani at a memorial service in Tehran honoring an Iranian general assassinated by Israel.
Ghaani is the commander of the so-called Al-Quds Brigades, the foreign unit of the Revolutionary Guard, and is therefore extremely influential.
Four years in office
As a top-level general, Ghaani oversees Iran’s military and intelligence operations abroad, but mainly in the Middle East. He took office in 2020 after his predecessor, Qassem Soleimani, was killed in a US drone strike in Iraq. Soleimani was considered the architect of the so-called Axis of Resistance, a network of militant groups fighting against Israel.
Almost two weeks ago, against the backdrop of Israeli bombing of Lebanon, it suddenly became quiet around Ghaani. Some media speculated that he was killed in an airstrike on October 3. Other reports claimed that those around him were suspected of spying for Israel and were interrogated as a result. Iranian state media denied the rumors and said Ghaani was in good health.
