The Italian naval ship Libra arrived in Albania on Wednesday. On board were 16 men from Egypt and Bangladesh who would be taken to the refugee center established by Italy.
The men had previously come to Europe via the central Mediterranean. They were arrested by Italian authorities on the open sea on Sunday evening.
Asylum applications are processed in an accelerated procedure
Last year, the right-wing Italian government and Albania signed an agreement providing for the establishment of refugee centers. There, Rome wants to process a number of asylum applications extraterritorially in an accelerated procedure and process deportations more quickly. Those entitled to asylum are transferred to Italy, those who are not eligible are sent back home after their stay in Albania.
The project is controversial. Human rights groups criticize the prison-like conditions for people there. The legality of the project is also being questioned.
