Clear language with parties – Van der Bellen must now determine the course

Date:

Days of preliminary decision on Austria’s political course. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen will once again receive the leaders of the major parties for individual conversations.

The course for Austria’s political future will be set in the coming days. Where is the journey going? Now it is the turn of the Federal President.

Kickl, Nehammer and Babler in the Hofburg on Monday
Alexander Van der Bellen will receive party leaders Herbert Kickl (FPÖ), Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) and Andreas Babler (SPÖ) in the Hofburg on Monday afternoon. Individual discussions after the meetings of the ‘Big Three’, which play an important role in planning the country’s future for the challenging years ahead. It remains a journey into the unknown. But contours are emerging on the horizon.

Next steps under the Chancellor’s leadership?
Nehammer and Babler have stated that they do not want anything in a government with election winner Kickl or the FPÖ (the ÖVP chancellor only controls Boss Blue). That probably won’t have changed on Monday. However, Van der Bellen insisted on stable conditions from the start and imposed no time pressure to restore them. However, the direction must now be determined. This would have to happen with Karl Nehammer as the explorer.

“Clear statement” in the coming days
Traditionally, the ÖVP has no major fundamental problems with the SPÖ as a partner – and the reverse is also true. This time, however, a third minor party will be needed to guarantee a full mandate. And therefore fitness to govern. This is where the NEOS will almost certainly come into play. The Greens recently made fun of themselves with the ÖVP (keyword including renaturation).

Even if the head of state will (have to) determine the next course, the respective parties will determine the “timetable” for further talks and possible negotiations, according to the Federal President’s Office. He will soon address the people. The president says his statement will “certainly be clear” and that he himself will “certainly be unambiguous.”
