Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen has expressed her extreme concern about the current developments: Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin should not be underestimated.
“I trust Putin with everything,” she expressed her concern to the newspapers of the media group Funke (Sunday edition). Europe must invest more in its defense and deterrence, she demanded. In the future, we will need even more than NATO’s two percent target. “We finally have to grow up,” Valtonen warned. “Putin is a dictator who only understands force.”
France and Germany are the main targets of Russian hybrid warfare, the foreign minister continued. Above all, people’s disinformation “aims to weaken support for Ukraine,” the politician from the conservative National Coalition Party emphasized. But Ukraine needs the utmost support.
Weapons supplies are essential
Valtonen said she did not want to comment on Germany’s decision not to provide Ukraine with long-range weapons for attacks in Russia, but added: “Under international law it is also permitted to attack military targets outside one’s own national borders – i.e. side of the aggressor.”
No one wants peace more than Ukraine, she continued. “But if you think you can end the war by no longer supplying weapons to Ukraine, then all I can say is: that doesn’t lead to the end of the war, it leads to the end of Ukraine.”
