The “basic rules courses” for asylum seekers, initiated by Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner (ÖVP), have started very well. According to department statistics, there were 3,300 participants in the first five months.
Anyone who receives protection and support must also know the basic rules of our democratic coexistence, Karner explains the courses in a written statement. He sees this, just like the in-kind card and community service, as a “clear sign of a stricter and therefore fairer system”.
The courses were presented in May. The aim was to involve refugees even before their asylum status has been clarified. The Federal Healthcare Agency has developed a curriculum together with the Integration Fund; almost 1,200 modules have been implemented so far.
Culture, manners, etc
It’s about culture and etiquette, democracy, rights and duties, equality and saying no to anti-Semitism. The ‘basic rules courses’ supplement the ‘orientation and values courses’ that already recognized refugees must follow.
So far, 48 people have refused the courses – and had to accept that their pocket money was halved to 20 euros.
