Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) spoke by telephone with UN Secretary General António Guterres on Wednesday about the shelling of UN peacekeepers in Lebanon. Eight Federal Army soldiers were slightly injured in the rocket fire at the UNIFIL Naqoura camp.
According to UNIFIL, a rocket from the north hit the headquarters of the UN peacekeeping mission. It was fired “probably by Hezbollah or an affiliated group.”
Nehammer expressed his deep concern and determination to work towards better protection of Austrian soldiers and all UN peacekeepers. “Attacks on UN forces are not only unacceptable, they also represent a colossal violation of international law. These men and women are doing valuable work to secure peace and deserve the highest respect and comprehensive protection,” the Chancellor said after the conversation with Guterres.
According to the Federal Chancellery, Guterres and Nehammer agreed that the safety of peacekeepers must be guaranteed by all parties involved. “The protection and integrity of peacekeepers is non-negotiable. These attacks must be stopped immediately and definitively,” the Chancellor further emphasized.
The UNIFIL Camp Naqoura is located approximately 110 kilometers south of the Lebanese capital Beirut, on the border with Israel. All Austrian UNIFIL soldiers are stationed there. According to the ministry, the eight injured soldiers were members of the repair platoon.
The UNIFIL peacekeeping force has been stationed in Lebanon since 1978 and consists of approximately 10,000 soldiers and civilians. Austria is participating in the mission with 158 soldiers.
