Russian leader Vladimir Putin met with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui on Monday. Choe has been in Russia for a week and has pledged support to the country ‘until victory’.
The Foreign Minister had already met her Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Friday (see video above), and was now following a visit to Putin. In a video you can see the two shaking hands. Lavrov and foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov were also present at the meeting. Putin said it was “a good tradition” to meet friends on holiday. The Day of People’s Unity is celebrated in Russia on November 4.
Joint military agreement
North Korea and Russia have had a joint military agreement since the summer. According to Western sources, around 10,000 North Korean forces have already been sent to war against Ukraine. The two governments did not deny the reports.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, meanwhile, criticized the West for its cautious response. On Monday there was a statement from the EU and the South Korean government. They call for the withdrawal of North Korean troops from Ukraine and an end to military cooperation.
“Russian aggression against Ukraine is an existential threat,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell wrote on Platform Demands for weapons are rejected.
