No strangers: Trump brings these hardliners into his team

Date:

The government team of the new American President Donald Trump is slowly taking shape. Among them are hardliners and loyal followers, such as Stephen Miller, who attracted attention during Trump’s first term with plans to deport migrants.

This time he will become deputy chief of staff and will be given far-reaching powers. “America is for Americans – and only for Americans,” Miller said at one of Trump’s campaign rallies. He announced that the Republican would drive criminal migrants, cartels and gangs out of the country.

Miller would already be the second migration hardliner in the team. As ‘border czar’, Tom Homan is supposed to oversee the mass deportation of illegal immigrants. During Trump’s first term, he separated children from their parents at the US border.

Difficult position vis-à-vis China and Iran
The personal details in foreign policy that have become known so far also create a tough position towards China and Iran. Representative Mike Waltz will become national security adviser in the White House. A few days before the US presidential election, he described China as the “biggest rival”. Trump must end the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East to focus on China.

“The era of blank checks for Ukraine from Congress is over,” he said, referring to the Republican majority in the House of Representatives. The secretary of state will likely be Senator Marco Rubio, who is known for his tough stance on China and Iran. Richard Grenell, the former US ambassador to Germany, has also been considered a candidate in recent days.

Loose rules but environmental standards?
The new US ambassador to the United Nations in New York could be MP Elise Stefanik, who, among other things, supported Trump’s false claims of fraud in the 2020 presidential election.

Another longtime proponent is former Congressman Lee Zeldin, who is set to become head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Trump announced he would make “swift and fair” decisions to ease regulations. At the same time, he will “adhere to the highest environmental standards.” The future American president denies that there is a climate crisis and plans a far-reaching expansion of domestic oil and gas production.

The swearing-in is scheduled for January 20, 2025.
