According to sources close to the White House, Trump will choose Latino Senator Marco Rubio as Secretary of State

Date:

The appointment must be officially confirmed, although everything indicates that the current senator from Florida will be the next person responsible for American foreign policy.

The newly elected President of the United States, Donald Trump, has chosen the senator from Florida, Marco Rubioas foreign minister, according to Reuters and the newspaper The New York Times citing sources close to the White House.

Although the appointment has not been officially confirmed, it is believed that Rubio, 53, will take charge of US foreign policy. He would become the first Latino to come to power. Rubio is the son of Cuban immigrants and was already considered by Trump as his running mate in these presidential elections, although he ultimately chose JD Vance.

Rubio, who speaks perfect Spanish, could also be a great support for the Trump administration’s foreign policy in relation to Latin America and the US’s strategic objectives in the region.

The senator has maintained a tough stance against the United States’ “geopolitical enemies”: China, Iran and Cuba. The Ukrainian war and Israel’s offensive against Palestine or Lebanon will in all likelihood be among the pressing problems to be confronted. On the former, Rubio has said in several recent interviews that Ukraine should aim for a negotiated deal with Russia rather than focusing on regaining all the territory Russia has taken over the past decade. He was also one of 15 Republican senators who voted against a $95 billion military aid package for Ukraine, which was passed in April. Moreover, the Cuban-American is also one staunch supporter of Israel.

Likewise, Rubio is one of the main hawks of China in the Senate. Notably, he asked the Treasury Department in 2019 to launch a national security investigation into the acquisition of Musical.ly by popular Chinese social media app TikTok, prompting an investigation and a controversial divestiture order.

As the top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, he has also put pressure on the Biden administration, demanding that it block all sales to Huawei earlier this year after the sanctioned Chinese tech company released a new laptop with an Intel AI processor chip launched.

Other confirmed costs

Rubio would join the team formed by the positions already confirmed: Susie Wiles, as chief of staff; Tom Homan, as the new ‘border czar’; Elise Stefanikas the country’s ambassador to the UN; And Stephan Molenaar as deputy director of White House policy.

Stefanik, 40, is considered a champion of the Israeli cause. For example, the next UN ambassador is expected to defend the slogans that guided the Republican campaign: “America first” and messages in favor of Israel, the newspaper said. The New York Post.

As for the 39-year-old Miller, he is the ideologue of Trump’s immigration strategy, as confirmed by newly elected Vice President JD Vance. Miller served as an adviser to Trump during his first term in the White House and was the architect of his controversial immigration and border policies. The new position seems to indicate that his role will be greater in this second period.

CNN reported this Tuesday that the governor of South Dakota, Kristi Noemwill be the next secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
