Radical right-wing congressman Matt Gaetz will become attorney general in the future US administration of Donald Trump. That should shock even die-hard Republicans.
Gaetz will “protect our borders, dismantle criminal organizations, and restore Americans’ deeply shaken faith and trust in the Department of Justice,” Trump announced in a written statement.
Gaetz was one of the lawmakers who ousted then-Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy from office over a year ago over a budget dispute. He was the driving force behind the internal uprising.
Gaetz belongs to the ultra-radicals
The 42-year-old lawyer has been among the ultra-radicals within his Republican faction for years and is a loyal supporter of Trump. He represents right-wing views and regularly spreads conspiracy theories. He is an opponent of abortion, rejects gay marriage and opposes aid to Ukraine, which is under attack by Russia.
After Trump supporters stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021, Gaetz blamed “Antifa” (anti-fascist groups) for the violence without any evidence.
The Justice Department will play a key role in Trump’s second term. Two reasons stand out:
- On the one hand, because of the criminal proceedings initiated against himself, two charges have been filed against Trump at the federal level by a special investigator appointed by the Department of Justice. Loyalist Gaetz could have the proceedings halted.
- On the other hand, Trump has threatened several political opponents to launch investigations and take legal action against them. This could also apply to Gaetz in the future.
Ministerial positions usually require confirmation by the Senate. According to reports, even among hard-line Republicans there is surprise at Gaetz’s appointment. Journalists report from the US Capitol that Trump could use his personality to test how much power he actually has in the party. Because: The US Congressional Ethics Committee is currently investigating Gaetz. He allegedly had sex with a minor at a drug party in 2017.
