New EU sanctions will be imposed on Iran this Monday. According to EU officials, member states want to take the punitive measures in response to the delivery of ballistic missiles to Russia.
This step is seen as a new taboo break due to the ongoing Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.
Iran Air is no longer allowed to land in the EU
The first sanctions against the missile deliveries were imposed in October. They were aimed, among other things, at the Iranian state airline Iran Air, which can now no longer fly to EU countries without running the risk of its planes being detained there.
Funds must be frozen
The new sanctions are intended to target additional actors involved in Iran’s ballistic missile program and the supply of these and other weapons to Russia. Until now, the EU has kept details secret. The background to this is, among other things, that the punitive measures provide for the freezing of assets present in the EU. Prior information could therefore allow those involved to keep their assets safe.
The formal decision on the sanctions will be taken in Brussels on Monday by the foreign ministers of the member states. They will meet there for their meeting in November.
