In the tough negotiations at the UN climate conference in Azerbaijan, there is hope for movement through the upcoming summit of the Group of Leading Economic Powers (G20) in Brazil.
“Without rapid emissions reductions, none of the G20 economies will be spared from climate-related economic carnage,” UN climate chief Simon Stiell said in Baku.
Climate crisis as theme number one
Climate impacts are already putting pressure on supply chains and food prices, destroying livelihoods in these countries as well. “The world is watching and expects strong signals that climate protection plays a central role for the world’s largest economies.”
The climate crisis should be topic number one at the two-day G20 summit starting next Monday in Rio de Janeiro.
Also the US and Brazil there
Argentina and the US will also be at the table during the summit. Both countries fear that they will withdraw from the Paris international climate agreement – in the case of the US as a result of the election of Donald Trump as future president. He had already pulled the US out of the agreement during his first term.
In Baku, the delegations would negotiate day and night on a new agreement on international climate finance that would guarantee poorer countries support in climate protection and adaptation to climate impacts in the future, Stiell said. “Progress on climate finance beyond our negotiations is just as important and the role of the G20 is crucial.”
