Concerns about financing – climate: Gewessler also sees that private individuals have a duty

Date:

Austrian Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) also sees that private individuals have a duty to finance the prevention of climate catastrophes. She also complains that the UN Climate Change Conference “is not as inclusive as it should be.” In Azerbaijan, protests by NGOs and human rights organizations are hardly possible.

Singing, clapping hands or clapping thighs is not allowed. Environmental organization Greenpeace therefore resorted to collective humming.

From Austria, Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler, spokesperson for energy and climate protection Lukas Hammer and EU parliamentarian Lena Schilling (all Greens) will be present. Speeches by ministers in the plenary should not exceed three minutes and must traditionally be communicated to the COP president in advance. This is intended to prevent excessive criticism of host country Azerbaijan and the negotiation process.

Make private individuals responsible
Gewessler spoke briefly about the lack of inclusion. She also recalled that this year the previous heat record would be broken again. “There is hardly any place left that is not affected by the devastating consequences of the climate crisis.” Achieving a climate-neutral society not only requires public money, but also private companies must be held accountable.

Poorer countries in particular need support in dealing with extreme climate conditions. “Our discussions here must be a starting point for much bigger change that goes beyond what we traditionally think of as international climate finance.”

The minister also reiterated the move away from fossil fuels, which Greenpeace Austria welcomed in a press release. “At the same time, Austria and the EU must finally make bold concessions on much-needed climate financing. The financing needs are in the trillions, the focus must be clearly on public financing – this is the only way the climate conference in Baku can be a success,” said Jasmin Duregger from Greenpeace Austria.
