Russia changed its nuclear doctrine a few days ago. Now, for the first time, a Russian intercontinental ballistic missile has been used in Ukraine. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military fires ATACMS and Storm Shadow missiles at targets in Russia. Against the backdrop of this massive escalation – including threats from the Kremlin against Ukraine’s Western allies – the US is now also considering adjusting its nuclear weapons strategy.
The responsible Deputy Minister of Defense, Richard Johnson, referred, among other things, to improved nuclear capabilities of China and Russia. To ensure effective nuclear deterrence, an adjustment to the nuclear strategy, which was last updated in 2022, may be necessary, he said during an appearance in Washington.
In addition to Russia and China, other countries are also increasingly coming to Washington’s attention. Several countries are expanding and modernizing their nuclear arsenals, Johnson said. At the same time, nuclear weapons play a greater role in the security strategy of these states.
Nuclear program “may be inadequate”
The Secretary of State warned that the modernization program of the US nuclear arsenal may be inadequate. Overall, “the logic of nuclear deterrence remains consistent.”
The United Nations spoke of a “worrisome development”. “This is all going in the wrong direction. What we want to see is that all parties take urgent steps to de-escalate the situation,” UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said in New York.
