Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) spoke on the phone with newly-elected US President Donald Trump on Monday evening – and warmly congratulated him on his overwhelming election victory.
Donald Trump has family ties with Central Europe: his ancestors came from Germany, his wife Melania is from Slovenia.
It was a very friendly conversation, Nehammer said enthusiastically. As the Chancellor announced
“In the face of global challenges, we reaffirmed our shared commitment to promoting peace, prosperity and freedom worldwide,” he said. He looks forward to “deepening the relationship between the United States and Austria during his coming term and strengthening our partnership.”
On American election day in early November, the ÖVP leader was one of the first domestic politicians to congratulate Trump.
